“Awareness for Survival”
FINIDP started by doing much more of sensitisation work among the school children and the local community on topical issues such as HIV/AIDS, reproductive health issues and family hygiene. We have found these very effective in ensuring behavioural change among the children. We adopted a model of ensuring that we create peer educators’ groups for sustainability in each of the target schools. We shall continue with these in more schools and communities of Mukono district, though we plan to include career guidance as well so that we impart life skills to especially orphans and vulnerable kids.
In our HIV/AIDS community intervention, we are working in schools to increase awareness and risk perception of catching HIV/AIDS and STDs among school children. Many HIV/AIDS orphans were identified in schools in this area, which warranted urgent sensitisation as a precautionary measure.
Malaria
Developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America face a terrible health crisis: 500 million of their people get malaria every year. Malaria is a deadly parasitic disease spread by mosquitoes. According to the UN's World Health Organization, it kills as many as 2.5 million people every year, most of which are children under the age of five. It is widely recognized in Uganda like in other parts of sub-Saharan Africa that pregnant women and children under the age of five are at particularly high risk of malaria morbidity and mortality. Therefore, we undertake projects in malaria prevention and control where we shall provide mosquito nets to school children in the rural areas. We plan to give pesticides to particular homes.
We also have projects to raise awareness about the precautionary measures to prevent breeding of mosquitoes that transmit malaria related to modification of the environment. To the poor communities, we plan to give malaria drugs if funds can permit. You can give material support in form of mosquito nets or pesticides to support our work against malaria.
In an effort to ensure a disease free society, we have Proposed Projects on provision of clean and safe drinking water in the rural communities of Mukono district through provision and protection of water sources. In the same vein, we shall continue with our home hygiene, sanitation and nutrition improvement projects. We plan to support rural schools and families by construction of latrines; hand wash cans and other hygiene facilities. on provision of clean and safe drinking water in the rural communities of Mukono district through provision and protection of water sources.
