In sub-Saharan Africa alone, over 13 million children have been orphaned from parents who have died of AIDS. USAID estimates this will climb to a staggering 40-50 million orphans by 2010, just of AIDS, in Africa alone. Africa has been compared to "a house on fire" with a critical situation for millions of orphans.

Aware of the above fact, FINIDP runs the orphan care and education support programme particularly targeting the vulnerable children such as AIDS orphans and other disadvantaged children. This is because the retention of children, especially AIDS orphans in schools, is very low due to lack of scholastic materials and other necessities of life. Many children are forced to wear the same tattered, dirty outfit every day and out of shame give up school. For many Ugandan orphans in general, the expense of the required school uniform and other scholastic materials is enough to prevent them from attending school. Therefore, FINIDP supports orphans and disadvantaged children with direct material support in form of uniforms, scholastic materials, food and other essentials of life to retain them in school. These children receive not only an education but also a safe mentoring atmosphere through school to help them grow and mature

Families are unable to absorb the expense of caring for another child. Many times, the widow whose husband has died of AIDS has no marketable skills. FINIDP assists caregivers and foster family siblings with practical skills to enable them to support themselves and care for their children. FINIDP provides start-up equipment and funds to start small income generating projects. These efforts impact the lives of hundreds of children.

We plan to establish and support a vocational skills training school particularly for the orphans forced out of school to make them self-reliant. We intend to offer training in tailoring, poultry keeping and tailoring among others.
